Non-Billable Hours

Welcome to the podcast about being a lawyer that has nothing to do with the practice of law. Join us, won’t you? The Legal Stuff (because obviously): This podcast is for informational and entertainment purposes only. This is a podcast by a lawyer, for lawyers. But I am not *your* lawyer. I’m also not your therapist, your finance professional, or your personal life coach. Nothing in this podcast should be considered legal advice, and any suggestions or recommendations that you decide to follow through with... those are on you my friend. This podcast is meant to be a place where we can talk openly and candidly about life as lawyers, but at the end of the day, you are the one making your own decisions. Perhaps we can help you make some better ones. We are not liable for any choices you make. But you probably already knew that. Theme Song: Jessie Reid- Madgrical (Artlist)

For litigators, trial is usually the highest stakes thing we can do.
Doing well at trial can be amazing for your career, good for your self esteem, and tell you that your imposter syndrome is a big ol’ liar, (at least… for a little bit). And because it’s such a big deal, there is a tendency to think that your own health, your own welfare, can take a back seat. Nutrition, sleep, hydration, movement… those things don’t matter during trial, right? No.
Failing to take care of yourself at trial in favour of spending more time working… isn’t going to serve you.
This episode is perfectly timed to offer essential self-care tips for lawyers during trial season, ensuring you stay healthy and energized.
Whether you’re facing a three-day hearing or a month-long trial, these tips are designed to help you navigate this demanding period with confidence and resilience. So, tune in and discover how to take care of yourself while you take care of business in the courtroom.
Follow, rate, and share this episode with your fellow litigators, and remember to soak up the last rays of summer while you prepare for a successful fall trial season. Go get 'em!

Welcome back to the podcast, dear friends, both new and old! Today's episode is a must-listen as we delve into the importance of taking a true vacation, especially for those in the legal profession. With the summer season winding down, many of us are reflecting on our vacation time—used or unused.
This episode focuses on two main points: why lawyers often struggle to take proper vacations, and why it's crucial to completely disconnect during your time off. Drawing from personal experiences and observations, we discuss the detrimental effects of working during vacations and the immense benefits of fully unplugging.
We also explore the societal pressures and misconceptions that lead many lawyers to feel indispensable, leading to a culture of constant connectivity. This episode is a heartfelt reminder to prioritize your well-being and to enjoy the life you've worked so hard to build.
If you're seeking tips on how to set yourself up for a successful and rejuvenating vacation, stay tuned for future episodes. For now, join us as we unpack the importance of truly taking time off. Don't forget to subscribe, leave a rating, and share your thoughts in the comments. Happy listening!

Welcome to the first episode of our mini-series on personal finance for lawyers.
We’re lawyers! We don’t need a budget; we are just naturally good at keeping track of our spending.
We’re lawyers! We don’t need a budget; because we excelled in law school, we excel in other parts of our life without even trying.
We’re lawyers! We don’t need a budget; we make good money and don’t need to be mindful about where our hard-earned cash is going.
Or maybe not...
Lawyers and law students are taught a lot of things in school, in articling, and throughout our careers. One thing we are not taught? How to manage our personal finances.
The journey into personal finance is multi-faceted and can seem intimidating. That’s why on today’s podcast, we are starting with budgeting. Budgeting is the personal finance spring board from which you can leap into worlds of paying down your debt, sustainably building your wealth, and making sure that you are set up for the best financial health in your future.
A budget might seem basic, and that’s because it is. Every good thing, every good skill, starts with a solid base. And no matter your income, your debt load, or your financial priorities, I promise you, you will benefit from a personal budget.
You might even *excel* at personal finance once you start!

**This episode is the first of a mini-series on Personal Finance for Lawyers.  We are going to get into some fun and helpful topics in this mini-series and I can’t wait for you to join.
